Added 12/07/2008. More work on Ufag's mockup
Hansa Brandenburg D.I.
The main gear has been installed.
Made of brass wire , wood core and litho plate.
The starstruts will be made in the same fashion. Will be back soon with
the wheels ,
will try to fabricate wire ( spoked wheels ) as
Ken Foran did in 1/15th scale.
Hope it works out as well as in 1/24th scale.

Engine work.

The
instrumentpanel , throttle and cockpit deck is installed.
Conforming/lining up the cockpit deck and let the glue dry ( resin ) was
a fight , not quite willing to do an "encore"..
The cockpit coaming is from real leather ( old wallet..!).
I used solderwire as a core for the coaming , wraped and glued the
leather around and used sewing wire & needle to finish it.
Once installed, I used leather cleaner and black leather paint to give
it the look.
Next is the engine and all the wiring from cockpit/fuel tank to engine.

The
controle column and seat is now in place, complete with the cables
running to the elevator.
The instrument with the springs leading to nowhere for now is - I do
assume - the altimeter, correct me if I am wrong...!!
The springs - I think - are there to eliminate the majority of the
aircraft vibration.
The springs are made from very thin copper wire , twisted around a rod ,
pulled from the rod and then saturated with CA.
The fuel tank is made from alu , messing and copper ( filler cap). The
tank is actually hollow and could be filled with fuel...!!
During the building process , there was some denting/deforming of the
tank , I left it as it is , me thinks it adds to the reality ;-)
I like the securing wire of the filler cap..!! Took me 30 minutes to get
that one in situ...
The tank is a little smaller to the original scale , had some fitting
problems, even had to do some cutting and sanding of the fire wall
and engine support. (had the engine dry fitted to make sure that the
tank was not in the way..)
The hole for the pump has also been produced. Now I do wonder, is it an
oil/grease pump or an airpump to pressurise the fuel tank..?
Any one please care to comment on this one..? Would be appreciated...! (
need to know where the hose from the pump will go..!!)
Next up will be the instrument panel and the upper cockpit decking, that
is going to be difficult story.

The
rudder bar is now in place.I changed the foot straps from wire to
leadfoil, looks a little bit more realistic and to scale.
I have added a little bit too much FUTURE , the lot is too shiny, will
have to tone it down with "matt future"( adding some baking powder to
the future..)
The controle stick is finished with a brass connector to receive the
control cables for the elevator.
The instrument panel turned out nice, however the instruments are not
quite in place as in the original, I made an error in the measurement
and after discovering it , the first dials were already glued tight with
super clue , so I had to be a little creative in positioning the rest of
the dials and switches. But it comes close though...!!
The housing of the instrument dials ( brass) is made from portholes ( 5
and 8 mm ) from model ship building..!!
The instrument faces are original decals from contact-resine.
The handles and switches are made from brass wire, bend and
"flat-hammered".
The magneto housing is sculpted from thick solder wire( see photo..).
Next up is installing the instrument panel, control stick, pump, and
upper cockpit deck.

Work
on the seat. The photos tell the story.

First
I made paper templates for the upper deck, to make sure it fits and all
is lined up correctly.
Once the paper templates where the correct format , I duplicated them
from wood veneer.
Now the tricky part , the covering...!
I roughly cut a piece of thin wood veneer for the area needed and soaked
it in water for a while to make sure that it will follow the sharp
curves.
Then put the veneer over the templates, secure it with clamps and use a
hair dryer to speed up the proces.
Once dry , the covering is glued with LOTS of super glue to the
templates, then carefully remove the excess veneer...Voila..!!
Still leaves me with the cockpit decking, but should be easy now.
The resin seat is a beauty , but decided to scratchbuild that one as
well to stick with the "natural materials"..

Added
is the throttle quadrant from brass plate and wood ( throttle grip). Also
the tailskid from wood and alu.
The rudder pedal is a copy from the Aviatik DI, I'll guess they are the
same..
The fuselage is getting along, same amount of stringers as in the real
plane, I do not know if the diagonal stringers
are authentic , but I had to add them for the structual integrity.
There will be some more internal bracing with stringers in the aft
fuselage, and next up, the upper aft fuselage, which will be a
challenge..!!
From there on, I will start with the cockpit and all its fiddely parts,
can't wait..!
Till next time..!

A
tiny update on the HBDI.
The prop is hand carved and the propboss made from alu and bras.
The controle colum from copper tubing and brass wire all soldered
together, hand grip from a wooden toothpick.
The pump from brass tubing and the hand grip again from a toothpick.
All small parts , but it took me quite some hours to produce them, I
ruined 2 props before I got it right...!!
Next up is the throttle quadrant , rudder pedals and dash board..

Added 27/02/2007. Here we have Ufag's mockup
Hansa Brandenburg D.I.
This is a "mockup" on how I would scratchbuild the model with
the help of the
Contact Resine 1/24th Museum Series Hansa Brandenburg D.I
Emphasis on "mock-up" , it is just a way to look at the
dimensions of the model, the actual scratch build
will be more sophisticated , like a full fuselage build up
according to the actual aircraft...
But this is still far away , I already spend too much time on
this ghost model..!!

Added 27/08/2006. Welcome to Ufag's builds page. To start off with we
have his
1/8th Hasegawa Sopwith Camel.
This is one of the rarest kits to get hold of today. So for those of
us that can't get
this kit or afford one here is a great build to drool over.
