These photographs were taken of the
CAC CA-12 Boomerang housed at the Australian National Aviation Museum situated
at Moorabbin Airport, Melbourne, Australia.
This particular Boomerang CA-12 –
A46-25 - was delivered in January 1943 and served
with No 83 Squadron, being
written off in 1945. It’s remains were discovered in Queensland
in 1986 by Hawker de Havilland
Victoria, who acquired it, and then donated it to the Museum in 1994.
83 Squadron was formed in Queensland in
February 1943 and was responsible for defensive patrols over Brisbane, employing
Airacobra and Boomerangs fighters for this. 83 Squadron was then deployed to
Melville Island for a month, before returning to the Queensland mainland in
January 1944, where the unit’s Boomerangs continued to provide fighter cover for
Allied shipping.
83 Squadron moved to New South Wales in August 1944, and
following a final move to Menangle, the Squadron was disbanded on 18 September
1945.
