‘Art of the Modeller’ is an event unique in the Melbourne
modelling calendar. Unlike other Melbourne modelling events, ‘AotM’ is
not a competition, but an annual exhibition and forms part of
The City of Whitehorse Spring Arts Festival.
The idea of it is to showcase the diversity of the hobby to the public
and create an engagement with them around the many models on display.
Don’t expect to see badly dressed overweight men looking bored or
scowling at the few members of the outside public who venture in that
you see at the average modelling competition (if there is anyone manning
the table at all). Many of the modellers are either building models on
the spot and explaining the process, or discussing the craft of the
builds, or telling the story of the model to the curious viewers who
have come to see the show. Being part of the Annual Spring Arts Festival
Day, which draws an attendance of a least ten thousand people on the
day, AotM draws a large crowd, possibly the biggest for a one-day
modelling event in the State.
Models on display come from either club members, or from specialist
modellers invited to attend the event, whose outstanding work showcases
a different aspect of the hobby to that seen in the average model show.
Don’t expect to see rows and rows of aftermarket laden Bf109’s and SS
Panzer dioramas (yawn), many of the exhibits are surprising, both in
their diversity and the levels of skills shown.
From Zbigniew “Zibby” Lelito and Brian Davis’ amazing card models to the
rural 1930’s dioramas of Laurie Green, Harry Edmond’s beautiful 1930’s
Mercedes Benz, Gron’s Circus, and Nick Gordic’s excellent World War One
models, Art Of The Modeller brings the best of modelling to the public
in an innovative and non-threatening way.
I would like to thank all the modellers at Art of The Modeller who
gladly gave their permission for me to photograph their models and
reproduce them here on “Ross’ Scale Models” Website.
